Can the county force you to re-pay cash aid assistance that was received over a year ago?
Last year I received county cash aid and now they are saying that I need to re-pay an overpayment due to “unreported income” on my part. This was from August of 2006! Isn’t their a limit to how far back they can go back and charge someone? Personally I beleive this is due to the county workers error not my neglegants :(

They should provide proof, but if you were overpaid you need to repay it or it will negatively effect your credit rating.

Yes, they can go back several years to recoup money that was fraudulently claimed or paid in error. Now if you knew it was an over-payment and took action to get it corrected when it was payed such as sending a certified letter of the error to them or if you can prove that you were forthright on your disclosure of income (Copy of your application) and that they were the ones in error and that an attempt to recoup those funds at this time would place you in an undue financial hardship and the error was through no fault of your own and you had no reason to question the amount at the time it was received, you can get them to waive recoupment. Rule of thumb on financial documents, including any paperwork associated with receiving public aid payments, is to keep it for seven years.
