Research conducted by credit card company American Express revealed the average number of loyalty points used to pay for travel through its Member Travel Services in April and May this year was almost 80 per cent more than in January. Ms Hoskins said many of the company’s customers were paying for a portion of their travel expenses on their card and using their Membership Rewards points to pay the balance. The travel company said Japan Airlines would soon become the first carrier to charge travellers a $1000 fuel surcharge on its popular Sydney to London route when its latest surcharge increases were applied from July 1.
