Cash Pay - Pay hikes leave a bitter taste - Irish Independent
Imagine the impact on public perception if Bertie Ahern, the Taoiseach, had appeared on the show to announce that he and his Government ministers had decided to forego their massive pay increases and were donating the cash to People in Need. Instead, as viewers handed over their hard-earned and already taxed cash to provide essential services that Ahern’s Government should already be providing, the Taoiseach and his colleagues sat back and counted their cash. Ahern is richly rewarded for his role, earning more than double the salary commanded by many of his European counterparts, and a temporary state residence makes not an iota of difference to the incomes of French or British politicians. A primary target should have been public sector pay, with Cowen extracting significant concessions on productivity and flexibility in return for small increases. Maybe, if we unleash that relentless dynamo called “national amnesia”, we shall soon forget the inconvenient life, and the inconvenient death, of Paul Quinn; rather as we have largely forgotten the inconvenient life, and the inconvenient death, of Robert McCartney; just as we have totally forgotten the inconvenient life, and the inconvenient death, of Eamon Collins.
