Federal cash will beef up drunk-driving patrols - Seattle Post Intelligencer- Cash Pay
On the day that one suspected drunken driver lost his life in a head-on collision near Kent, state traffic officials announced plans to dramatically boost efforts over the next year to catch both speeders and impaired drivers and to prevent such deaths by using special weekend patrols. Now, with an infusion of money from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, the State Patrol and law enforcement agencies across the state will be able to do just that. Under a program dubbed X-52, the safety commission will funnel $450,000 in federal money to law enforcement agencies around the state to help pay for these extra patrols beginning the weekend of Feb. Commission Director Lowell Porter, former chief of the Washington State Patrol, said the money is federal funding that his agency will provide to match efforts by local police agencies. For example, he said, if a department provides 20 hours of overtime for a special weekend enforcement effort, the commission will pay for another 20 hours of overtime. Find Out More
