The prepaid MasterCard debit cards, part of the Social Security Administration’s paperless push, are targeted at those who do not have bank accounts for direct deposit. More than 4-million Social Security and Supplemental Security Income recipients who do not have bank accounts now have the option of getting a prepaid MasterCard debit card with their benefits instead of a paper check. Instead of transferring funds to a Social Security recipient’s bank account, the government automatically transfers their benefits to a debit card.
